Melbourne International Fee Remission Scholarships (MIFRS), University of Melbourne, Australia

The Melbourne International Fee Remission Scholarship (MIFRS) is awarded to international students wishing to undertake graduate research degree studies at the University of Melbourne. MIFRSs are funded by the University with each faculty having a limited number to award.

Number
Each year the University of Melbourne offers about 150 MIFRSs.

The MIFRS covers full tuition costs, but not overseas student health care.

Eligibility criteria
To be considered for an MIFRS, applicants need to have an unconditional offer of a place in a graduate research degree course (eg masters by research, PhD or other research doctorate) at the University of Melbourne. "A to Z", Tes Bahasa Hingga Akademik

Mereka yang tertarik menuntut ilmu di negeri lain setidaknya pernah mendengar istilah TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, GMAT, dan GRE. Yuk, kita simak satu per satu tes tersebut!

Pada zaman sekarang, menguasai bahasa Inggris yang merupakan bahasa internasional sudah wajib hukumnya. Wajib, terlebih bagi mereka yang ingin kuliah di luar negeri.

Aplikasi ke perguruan tinggi umumnya mensyaratkan skor bahasa Inggris. Director Access Education Beyond, Brook W Ross, memaparkan, ada dua ujian kecakapan berbahasa Inggris berskala internasional, yakni international English language testing system (IELTS) dan test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL).

Ribuan universitas di seluruh dunia menerima hasil kedua tes tersebut. Kedua tes itu pada dasarnya terbagi dalam empat komponen, yakni berbicara, menulis, mendengarkan, dan membaca.

Namun, ada baiknya sebelum melamar, calon mahasiswa mencari informasi terlebih dahulu jenis-jenis tes yang diinginkan perguruan tinggi pilihannya. Kedua tersebut diselenggarakan dan dikembangkan oleh lembaga berbeda dan bentuk skor pun lain.

Tidak ada istilah lulus atau tidak dalam tes TOEFL dan IELTS. Lembaga tes memberikan skor, sementara institusi pendidikan yang menentukan standar skor yang mereka inginkan dari pelamar.

TOEFL

Format ujian TOEFL internasional terkini dioperasikan melalui internet TOEFL atau internet-Based Test (TOEFL iBT). Berbagai informasi tentang TOEFL, dari biaya hingga jadwal ujian di Indonesia, bisa diunduh di situs www.ets.org/toefl.

University Counselor Access Education Beyond, Novi Kusumaningrum, mengungkapkan, universitas-universitas di dunia umumnya mensyaratkan skor TOEFL iBT 79-80 atau sama dengan skor 550 paper based TOEFL. Adapun untuk program pascasarjana (S-2 dan S-3) skor yang dibutuhkan mencapai 100-115 atau setara 600-650 skor paper based TOEFL.

IELTS

Ujian Bahasa Inggris untuk keperluan akademik berskala internasional lainnya adalah IELTS. Ujian ini juga mengukur kemampuan seseorang berkomunikasi dalam bahasa Inggris, baik membaca, menulis, berbicara, maupun mendengarkan. Berbagai informasi tentang IELTS, termasuk pusat tes di berbagai kota di Indonesia, terdapat di situs www.ielts.org.

Novi mengatakan, untuk mendaftar program sarjana, band scale setidaknya harus berada dalam rentang 6.0-6.5. Adapun bagi peminat program pascasarjana untuk amannya mencapai band scale 7.0-7.5.

"Bidang perkuliahan yang diinginkan ikut menentukan. Jurusan seperti Sastra Inggris dan Sejarah, misalnya, mensyaratkan kompetensi berbahasa Inggris lebih tinggi," ujar Novi.

Kedua tes itu dapat diambil lebih dari satu kali dan hasilnya berlaku selama dua tahun.

Persiapan menghadapi tes Bahasa Inggris tersebut dapat melalui berbagai cara. Ana (31), warga Jakarta Selatan, yang akan menempuh tes IELTS, memilih mengikuti kursus persiapan selama sepekan di sebuah lembaga konsultan pendidikan luar negeri di Kuningan, Jakarta.

"Saya sudah kursus bahasa Inggris sebelumnya dan ikut kursus persiapan supaya dapat gambaran soal ujian dan berlatih. Saya belum pernah ujian IELTS sebelumnya," ujar perempuan yang ingin melanjutkan pendidikan ke program pascasarjana itu.

Kursus sejenis biasanya ditawarkan pula di berbagai tempat kursus bahasa Inggris besar. Calon peserta tes bisa pula belajar lewat buku persiapan TOEFL atau IELTS yang banyak tersedia di toko buku dan berlatih lewat berbagai situs di internet.

Hanya standarisasi

Brook W Ross mengatakan, untuk program sarjana, sejumlah perguruan tinggi di luar negeri juga menyediakan persiapan bahasa Inggris bagi mahasiswa asing di kampus. SAT, GMAT, dan GRE. Skor tes lain yang terkadang muncul di daftar persyaratan aplikasi perguruan tinggi di luar negeri adalah SAT, GMAT, dan GRE.

Novi menjelaskan, ujian-ujian itu lebih merupakan tes standarisasi akademis yang pada dasarnya digunakan sebagai ujian saringan masuk calon mahasiswa di negara tertentu, dalam hal ini Amerika Serikat (AS). Tes akademis itu tersedia dalam bahasa Inggris.

"Nilai SAT, misalnya, menjadi persyaratan bagi calon mahasiswa Amerika yang ingin mendaftar program sarjana, kecuali masuk ke community college. Tes itu dulu menjadi syarat pula bagi calon mahasiswa asing. Akan tetapi, ada juga yang tidak mensyaratkan SAT bag mahasiswa asing, cukup kemampuan bahasa Inggris dan nilai rapor," ujarnya.

Sejumlah perguruan tinggi di negara lain ada juga yang meminta skor SAT, seperti Singapore Management University. Komponen tes ini secara garis besar adalah kemampuan membaca kritis, Matematika, dan menulis.

Begitu juga dengan General Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) dun General Record Examination (GRE). Kedua tes itu guna menguji kemampuan seseorang yang ingin mengikuti program pascasarjana (S-2 dun S-3).

GMAT kerap disyaratkan untuk mereka yang ingin menempuh pendidikan di bidang manajemen. Adapun GRE adalah tes akademik bagi mereka yang ingin berkuliah di luar bidang manajemen.

Ada dua macam tes GRE, yakni GRE General dun GRE Subject. Bentuk GRE General (kecerdasan umum) mirip Tes Potensi Akademik. Sementara itu, GRE Subject lebih mengukur kemampuan seseorang mengenai subyek tertentu. Adapun pusat tes di Indonesia untuk GRE dapat ditelusuri lewat www.ets.org, sedangkan informasi tentang GMAT dapat diperoleh pada situs resmi pengembang tes di www.mba.com.

"Persiapan bahasa harus dipikirkan jauh-jauh hari. Tidak bisa yang namanya sistem kebut semalam," ujar Novi. (INDIRA PERMANASARI)

Master Scholarships, W SyCip Graduate School of Business, Asian Institute of Management, Philippines

Asian Institute of Management’s W. SyCip “Best and Brightest” full scholarship program offers the top undergraduate students with high GMAT/AIMAT scores, and solid work background MBA or MM full tuition scholarship, economy air fare from and to the students’ home country, lodging at the AIM dormitory, and a monthly stipend. The W. SyCip Graduate School of Business awards to the Top 10% (based on AIMAT/GMAT scores) of the incoming batch of MBA and MM students a limited number of scholarships of 100% or 50% off tuition fees. To qualify, you must demonstrate academic and extra-curricular achievements, and show leadership promise.

A-Z Tes TOEFL Berbasis Internet

Perkembangan teknologi mendorong adanya perubahan di segala lini. Tak terkecuali dengan mekanisme tes kemampuan bahasa Inggris. Jika Anda memiliki rencana untuk studi ke luar negeri, di negara yang menggunakan pengantar pembelajaran dengan bahasa Inggris, model tes TOEFL yang satu ini perlu diketahui: Internet Based-Test TOEFL (IBT TOEFL).

IBT TOEFL mengukur kemampuan Anda untuk menggunakan dan mengerti bahasa Inggris di tingkat universitas. Adapun, ujiannya terdiri dari Listening (menyimak/mendengarkan), Reading (membaca), Speaking (berbicara), dan Writing (menulis). Komponen struktur dari format sebelumnya, saat ini sudah dihilangkan dan diganti dengan komponen Speaking (berbicara).

Penggantian ini tentunya akan menjadi tantangan bagi sebagian masyarakat Indonesia yang selama ini lebih terbiasa menggunakan Bahasa Inggris secara pasif untuk berkomunikasi. IBT TOEFL berbeda dengan Institutional Testing Program TOEFL (ITP TOEFL). IBT TOEFL tesnya menggunakan internet. Pendaftaran serta pembayaran pun menggunakan sistem online. Karena IBT TOEFL tergolong mahal, jangan pernah sia-siakan untuk mengikuti TOEFL jenis ini.  

Berikut adalah beberapa tips untuk menghadapi IBT TOEFL:   

Tes Membaca (Reading)

1. Sering-seringlah berlatih dengan membaca artikel dengan teks berbahasa Inggris.

2. Daripada membaca seluruh kata dan kalimat, belajarlah untuk mencari kata-kata penting (scanning dan skimming) untuk mencari tahu poin utama.

3. Pilih beberapa kata asing dalam bagian poin utama dan tebak maknanya.

4. Pilih semua kata ganti (him, her, they, them, dan lain-lain) dalam satu bagian untuk mengidentifikasi  kata benda yang mirip dengan kata ganti tersebut.

5. Identifikasi jenis soal, seperti sebab akibat, membandingkan dan komparasi, pengklasifikasian dan lain-lain.

Tes Mendengarkan (Listening)

1. Sering dengarkan siaran televisi atau radio untuk memperhatikan bagaimana pola intonasi ketika menyampaikan makna.

2. Ketika tes mendengarkan, perhatikan apa yang diperdengarkan oleh pembicara. Apakah nada atau intonasi ingin menyampaikan atau memberitahu sesuatu? Apakah tingkat intonasi menggunakan bahasa formal atau santai? Apakah suara pembicara tenang atau emosional?

3. Pikirkan apa yang pembicara harapkan. Apakah ia mau meminta maaf, mengeluh, membuat saran, marah atau lainnya.  

Tes Berbicara (Speaking)

1. Berlatih dengan menggunakan buku yang mencakup pertanyaan tentang IBT TOEFL dari awal hingga akhir.

2. Berlatihlah dengan membaca sebuah artikel pendek lalu buatlah outline yang hanya mencakup poin-poin utama dari artikel

3. Ketika tes, jika mendengarkan soal mengenai suatu masalah berikanlah saran untuk masalah tersebut.

4. Kenali sikap pembicara melalui intonasi atau penekanan dan kata pilihan. Hal ini memudahkan anda memahami sudut pandang si pembicara dan mudah untuk memberikan tanggapan.  

Tes Menulis (Writing)

1. Sebelum ujian, usahakan mempraktekan satu topik esai. Pastikan menghabiskan 30 menit untuk menuliskannya dan juga merevisi esai tersebut.

2. Ketika ujian, identifikasi satu ide utama dan beberapa poin utama untuk mendukung gagasan tersebut.

3. Mengembangkan esai dengan menggunakan penjelasan yang tepat dan detail.

4. Tingkatkan kosakata Anda dan belajar untuk menggunakannya secara tepat. Pelajari struktur gramatikal, konvensi ejaan, tanda baca dan tata letak.

5. Usahakan tulisan Anda terorganisir, menampilkan suatu kesatuan pemikiran dan koheren.

6. Gunakan kata-kata sinyal seperti “on one hand” atau “in conclusion” untuk membuat struktur yang jelas dalam respon yang Anda berikan.  

Nah, yang terpenting adalah terus berusaha dan jangan menyerah jika nilai Anda masih rendah. Selamat mencoba!

International Undergraduate and Postgraduate Scholarships, University Of Wales, UK

International Scholarships for 2011/12 entry:

A number of Scholarships are available from the University of Wales, Newport. Students applying for September 2011 or January 2012 entry are eligible to apply for these awards.

Students wishing to apply for these scholarships need to download and complete the Scholarship Application Form

A limited number of Scholarships are available and will be awarded to students on the basis of outstanding achievement. Categories you may wish to consider applying under are:

• Academic
• Social or Cultural: including community projects or voluntary work
• Outstanding Artistic Achievement

The application form requires you to undertake a 500-700 word piece of work supporting your application. Please note that applications must be fully completed and your supporting statement must be within the word limit.

Scholarships are available for both undergraduate and postgraduate applicants and awards are made for the academic year 2011/2012 (or for the duration of your course). Scholarships of £1,000 per year will be awarded and the scholarship award will be deducted from your annual tuition fee. A maximum of 10 undergraduate and 5 postgraduate scholarship awards will be made for each intake (September 2011 and January 2012).

Scholarships will be awarded by the Scholarship Committee based upon merit through consideration of a completed Scholarship Application Form. These awards will be made at the beginning of the each semester and the decision by the Scholarship Committee is final.

Applicants must hold a Visa Letter/CAS for a taught undergraduate or postgraduate course at the University and have firmly accepted their offer before submitting an application. Conditional offer holders may apply but will only be considered for the scholarship after all conditions have been met.

Notes for applicants:

• Students are only eligible to apply for ONE University scholarship award.

Erasmus Mundus Master Scholarships in Astronomy and Astrophysics, AstroMundus, Europe

AstroMundus is a 2-years Erasmus Mundus Masters Course (120 ECTS) in Astronomy and Astrophysics offered by a consortium of 5 partner universities (University of Innsbruck, University of Belgrade, University of Goettingen, University of Padova & University of Rome Tor Vergata) in 4 different countries: Austria, Italy, Germany, and Serbia.

Its main objective is to provide top-ranked students with an excellent background in Astrophysics, to introduce them to the world of modern astrophysical research, and foster their future career in this field. At the same time, in the spirit of the Erasmus Mundus programmes, we promote cultural exchanges between Third Country and European students and academics.

AstroMundus students carry out their master studies in at least 2 and up to four of these countries, in a stimulating and scientifically excellent international environment.

The official language of the course is English, but students are given the possibility to learn the languages of the host countries by attending language courses at the partner universities.

Successful students will be awarded a Joint Master Degree by all partner universities they have visited during the Master studies. In addition they will obtain a Diploma Supplement to facilitate the recognition of their degree in other universities / countries. At the end of each 2-years cycle of the Master Programme the best master thesis of the cycle will be awarded a prize.

AstroMundus offers an excellent educational level in all branches of Astrophysics, as insured by the wide variety of expertise in the field covered by this international partnership. The main topics covered by the Master programme are:

• Galactic Astrophysics (the Sun and the Solar system, the Milky Way, stellar evolution, the interstellar medium)
• Extrasolar planets
• Extragalactic Astrophysics (galaxies, galaxy evolution, galaxy clusters, intra-cluster medium, star formation)
• Active Galactic Nuclei (including accretion theory, relativistic jets, modelling)

Applicants that wish to apply also for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship will have to state so in the application form. No additional application is required. Students that already received in the past an “Erasmus Mundus” scholarship are not eligible for a new one. Also, a student can apply for a maximum of 3 different Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses starting in the same academic year. Students that apply for more than 3 EM Courses will be excluded from the selection for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

There are two categories of scholarships:

1. Category A: They are intended as full scholarships and are reserved to Third Country students. Category A scholarships cover the registration fees (including the insurance), include a contribution to travel, installation and any other type of costs of 8000 €, and a monthly allowance of 1000 €/month for the whole duration of the Masters Course (22 months).
2. Category B: They are intended as a financial contribution for European students or for students that have carried out their main activity in one of the European or associated countries for more than 12 months during the last 5 years. Category B scholarships cover the registration fees (including the insurance), include a contribution to travel, installation and any other type of costs of 3000 € (this contribution is provided only to students that will have a mobility period at the university of Belgrade), and a monthly allowance of 500 €/month for the whole duration of the Masters Course (22 months).

Pre-selected candidates might be interviewed by video-conference (or teleconference if not otherwise possible). Deadline for both non-European and European students: Nov 30th 2011
