Description:
In 2010 Tourism Cares will award three Joseph R. Stone Scholarships, (as part of the American Society of Travel Agents Scholarship Fund), in the amount of $2,500 each, to permanent residents of the United States or Canada, who are entering or returning full-time or part-time graduate students, studying travel and tourism or hospitality, at an accredited four-year college or university in the United States or Canada. This scholarship was established to honor Joseph R. Stone, past President of ASTA.

The applicant must:

• be a permanent resident of the United States or Canada.
• be enrolled full-time or part-time at an accredited four-year college or university in the United States or Canada.
• be a graduate student who can demonstrate a clear focus on and commitment to the tourism-subject area.
• have a cumulative 3.0 grade point average (GPA), or greater, on a 4.0 scale.
• be an entering or returning graduate student, in the fall of the calendar year of application.
• be enrolled in school fall semester 2010 to be eligible to receive the scholarship award. (The recipient’s award check will be sent to the student’s financial aid office for fall semester for tuition, books, educational fees, and research-related expenses only.)

To apply, please scan to PDF (NOT JPEG) file format ALL of the following items and upload electronically to the Tourism Cares STARS online application platform, accessible from the Tourism Cares website www.tourismcares.org, except the transcript* BEFORE 5PM EST Thursday, April 15, 2010:

• Completed and signed 2010 Tourism Cares Scholarship application scanned to PDF
(download form from Tourism Cares online scholarship platform).
• Legible copy of U.S. or Canadian driver’s license or passport as proof of permanent residency scanned to PDF.
• Word-processed résumé scanned to PDF.
• Letter of recommendation from a tourism- or hospitality-related faculty member on official school letterhead and hand signed scanned to PDF.
• Letter of recommendation from a professional in the tourism or hospitality industry on official company letterhead and hand signed scanned to PDF.
• Go to Purdue University’s Online Writing Lab to follow the APA Formatting and Style Guide to write a two-page original essay, which must be signed to verify the work is student’s original, and scanned to PDF. Please answer the following question:

You have chosen to pursue a career path in the travel and tourism or hospitality industry. What changes have you observed thus far in the industry, and what changes do you anticipate in the future of the industry? Where do you see your future potential in the industry?

* An official copy of the student’s current school transcript, detailing courses completed, academic standing, and GPA, must be sent directly from the school to Tourism Cares to arrive by the deadline. Unofficial transcripts, or transcripts that arrive after the deadline, will not be accepted.

What is Tourism Cares?

Tourism Cares is a 501(c) (3) non-profit public charity with a mission to preserve the travel experience for future generations. It accomplishes this by mobilizing the travel and tourism industry and travelers alike to give back to society through grants to natural, cultural and historic sites worldwide; through academic, professional, and service-learning scholarships for students of hospitality and tourism; and through the organization of volunteer efforts to clean up and restore tourism-related sites in need of care and rejuvenation.
