PhD Studentship in Multi-Hop Cognitive Networks, EURECOM, France

PhD Position in Multi-Hop Cognitive Networks
Mobile Communications, EURECOM, France
Applications are invited by the Mobile Communications department at EURECOM, France, for a PhD studentship in the area of multi-hop cognitive networks, with a competitive salary.
EURECOM is an elite French graduate school and research center conducting high quality research in the areas of Mobile Communication, Networking and Security, and Multimedia. It is situated in Sophia Antipolis (between Nice and Cannes), Europe’s leading international science park. More information about the school and department are available at http://www.eurecom.fr/index.en.htm andhttp://www.eurecom.fr/cm/welcome.en.htm.
Topic
This position is partially funded by the French ANR project LICORNE (Leveraging Insurance for services providers cohabitation over Cognitive Radio Networks). This project deals with multi-hop networks formed by secondary (cognitive) users opportunistically taking advantage of available spectrum holes. The focus of the position will be on performance analysis (e.g. studying the long-term connectivity properties of such networks, and the quality of service that could be supported under different primary activity profiles) and routing/transport aspects (e.g. appropriate metrics for choosing cognitive paths based on availability statistics, and opportunistic forwarding mechanisms to deal with “unexpected” primary user activity). The selected candidate will have a chance to develop an expertise in diverse areas, in addition to Cognitive Networks and Mesh Networks, like Probabilistic Analysis, Complex Networks, Delay Tolerant Networking etc. Some examples of past or ongoing research on these areas can be found at http://www.eurecom.fr/~spyropou/.
Requirements
We are looking for candidates who are highly motivated to conduct high quality research, publish in top venues, and pursue a doctoral degree. Candidates should have a Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related area, preferably with a focus on networking or communications. They are also expected to have good analytical skills and some background in the area of wireless networking. Good programming skills and experience in popular simulation environments is a plus. A good level of written and spoken English is mandatory. Knowledge of French is not required, but would be a plus.
Application material
The position is available immediately, but the selected candidate is expected to join no later thanSeptember 2011. The selection process will begin upon receipt of the applications, and will continue until the position is filled.
Interested individuals should submit:

  • Detailed cv
  • Names and contact details of at least two referees, who are willing to provide detailed recommendation letters about the candidate
